Finding the right contact lenses when you have dry eyes can be challenging. Standard lenses often cause irritation, blurred vision, or discomfort due to reduced tear film stability and lower oxygen flow. Bella contact lenses offer a range of options designed to prioritise moisture retention and comfort while correcting vision or enhancing eye colour. This guide explains which Bella lenses work best for dry eyes, the technology behind them, and how to choose lenses that stay comfortable throughout the day.
Why Dry Eye Matters With Contact Lenses
Dryness occurs when the tear film the delicate layer of moisture protecting your eye—becomes unstable, evaporates too quickly, or is insufficient. Healthy tears are vital for your eyes to function correctly, as they are responsible for:
-
Lubricating the Cornea: Keeping the surface smooth and healthy.
-
Maintaining Clear Vision: Providing a consistent refractive surface.
-
Reducing Friction: Allowing the eyelid to glide effortlessly over the lens surface.
The Risks of Wearing Lenses with Dry Eyes
Wearing contact lenses without considering oxygen permeability and hydration can exacerbate dryness, leading to:
-
Irritation: That nagging "foreign body" sensation, as if something is stuck in your eye.
-
Redness and Itchiness: Signs of a strained and thirsty cornea.
-
Fluctuating Vision: Blurring that clears momentarily when you blink.
-
Lens Deposits: Dry surfaces can attract proteins and allergens, making the lenses feel "gritty" over time.
The Bella Contact Lenses Difference: Modern Material Science
Traditional lenses can sometimes act like a sponge, drawing moisture away from the eye. However, Bella contact lenses are engineered from advanced materials designed for the British lifestyle.
With high water content and superior breathability, these lenses allow oxygen to reach the eye freely while locking in moisture. This modern approach ensures that even those prone to dryness can enjoy a comfortable, "barely-there" feel from morning until evening.
What to Look for in Contact Lenses if You Have Dry Eyes
Before we highlight specific Bella options, these features are key:
High Breathability (Oxygen Permeability)
Your eyes don't have a blood supply to provide oxygen; they "breathe" directly from the air. Eyes prone to dryness benefit immensely from lenses with high oxygen permeability ($Dk/t$). This allows the cornea to stay healthy, significantly reducing the risk of hypoxia (oxygen deprivation) and the discomfort that follows a long day at the office.
Moisture-Locking Technology
Traditional lenses can sometimes lose water to the atmosphere, especially in air-conditioned environments. Our premium ranges feature integrated wetting agents or hydrating surface treatments. These technologies lock moisture into the lens matrix, ensuring the surface remains "slippery" and hydrated from your morning commute until you wind down at night.
Thin & Flexible Design
Comfort is often determined by the interaction between your eyelid and the lens. Bella lenses are engineered with a tapered, ultra-thin edge profile. This precision design reduces friction every time you blink, providing a seamless "buffer" that prevents that gritty, tired feeling at the end of the day.
Daily Disposable Wear
For those with particularly sensitive or dry eyes, Daily Disposables are the gold standard. By using a fresh, sterile lens every morning, you eliminate the risk of protein deposits or cleaning solution residues both of which can aggravate dryness and trap seasonal allergens.
When selecting your Bella lenses, always prioritise options that combine breathable materials with high moisture retention. This dual-action approach ensures your eyes stay "bright and white" while you enjoy a stunning colour transformation.

Professional Care: Optimising Comfort for Sensitive Eyes
Even with the advanced moisture-retaining technology of Bella lenses, your lifestyle and care routine play a vital role in maintaining "all-day comfort." Follow these four essential steps to keep your eyes feeling fresh and hydrated.
Use Compatible Rewetting Drops
Not all eye drops are created equal. We recommend preservative-free rewetting drops specifically formulated for use with contact lenses. Standard over-the-counter drops often contain preservatives that can bind to the lens material, leading to clouded vision or unwanted deposits. A quick "boost" of hydration can make all the difference during a long day.
Stay Hydrated & Take Digital Breaks
In our screen-centric world, we tend to blink up to 60% less when focusing on a monitor or phone. This dries out the tear film rapidly. We advise following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (approx. 6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds. This simple habit encourages natural blinking and refreshes your eye’s moisture levels.
Opt for Daily Disposable Lenses
If you suffer from seasonal allergies or chronic dryness, Daily Disposables are the gold standard. By discarding the lenses every night, you eliminate the build-up of proteins, lipids, and environmental allergens (like pollen) that can cling to the lens surface and cause irritation. It is the most hygienic and convenient way to wear colour.
Prioritise a Professional Eye Exam
A premium lens only performs its best when it fits perfectly. Ensure you have an up-to-date contact lens fitting from a qualified UK optician. If the Base Curve (BC) or Diameter (DIA) is even slightly off, the lens may move excessively or sit too tightly, causing dryness regardless of how high the water content is. A correct fit ensures a seamless, "barely-there" feel.

The blog is super helpful for anyone with dry eyes. I’ve had redness, itchiness and sensitivity to light myself. I got the Bella prescription Brown Shadow recently and it’s been good so far. I just make sure not to wear them more than 8 hours. Don’t buy cheap lenses and using the right solution makes a difference too.
